The Best Babysitter is a Safe Sitter!

Safe Sitter is a medically accurate babysitting preparation program designed for students age 11 and older.  The competency-based, interactive curriculum was written by a pediatrician and teaches safe and nurturing child care techniques. Safe Sitter, Inc. is the only national nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to preparing adolescents to be safe, nurturing babysitters. 

The Safe Sitter course includes topics such as babysitting as a business, babysitting ethics (such as when it's OK to cancel or refuse a babysitting job), how to care for a choking infant or child, personal safety, how to care for children (diapering, holding an infant, feeding, entertaining, etc.), injury prevention, basic first aid, rescue breathing, preventing problem behavior, and behavior management. 

The 2 Day course includes hands-on manikin practice, small group interaction, role-playing, games, and discussion. To ensure high quality, a low ratio of students to instructors is required - no more than 8 students for each instructor – therefore pre-registration is required! Students must pass a written and practical exam proving mastery of key concepts. 

 Class hours:
   Friday Night  6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
   Saturday      9:00 AM - 3:00 PM, which includes a 30 minute lunch break.

Attendance at all sessions is required – classes will begin and end on time – students must be present for the entire session to receive a certificate.

Cost of Training

The program costs $50.00  ($40.00 for ARBC Church Members) which includes all materials. Scholarships and gift certificates are available.  Pre-Payment is required. Class sizes are limited. Students are asked to bring their own lunch. Drinks can be purchased for $.50.  Contact the church office at 919-779-0434 for information on how to register! Classes are held at Aversboro Road Baptist Church, 1600 Aversboro Road, Garner, NC.  Classes will be held in the basement level, room 10.   Mrs. Lois McCoy, our Minister to Children and Rev. Joe Sinclair, our Minister to Students are trained instructors and will lead our classes.

Safe Sitter has attracted the attention of the media since its development in 1980. Dr. Patricia A. Keener, a pediatrician,  developed the program after a nurse’s 18 month old daughter choked to death while under the care of an adult sitter. In reflecting on her colleague's loss, Dr. Keener recognized the vulnerability of young children when cared for by unprepared child care providers.

Dr. Keener has made numerous appearances on shows such as The Today Show, Good Morning America,  CBS This Morning, and the John Walsh Show.  Safe Sitter® articles are routinely featured in an array of periodicals including The New York Times, Newsweek, Good Housekeeping, and Sesame Street Magazine Parent's Guide, as well as various medical journals. Safe Sitter has been recognized for excellence by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
